Speech Eval
Peter had his speech eval done on Tuesday at the Children's Therapy Unit (CTU) that is affiliated with Good Sam here in Puyallup. The Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) was wonderful. Peter worked really hard for her and really gave her a good picture of who he is. One of the major issues was that he was unable to follow directions. We have noticed that around the house but thought it was just us expecting too much. We were wrong, he had the same issue during the testing and it really gave us some insight on what he udnerstands. She beleived that the reason for his difficulties is because he likes to repeat and listen for phrases but because of his hearing loss before he got the tubes put in his ears, he was only catching pieces of those phrases and not understanding. Her estimate, without actually scoring the test, was that he was about 1.5 Standard Deviations below. Pretty much, it means that he needs help with his speech. We are on the wait list at the CTU and at Mary Bridge. Both have a 6 month waiting period. We will work on directions words a lot with him and work on using shortened sentences. He has already picked up a lot this week. I think the biggest part is that we have to work with him to gain back the skills that he lost or missed out due to his ear infections. We are pretty sure that he will be on par quite quickly.
